December 8: Today is the anniversary of the foundation of The Brookings Institution in 1927 by Robert S. Brookings who led the merger of three non-profit organizations, which became known as one of the oldest political “Think Tanks” of the world.

“The Brookings Institution is a nonprofit public policy organization based in Washington, DC. Our mission is to conduct high-quality, independent research and, based on that research, to provide innovative, practical recommendations that advance three broad goals:

Brookings Institution, research institute, not-for-profit, founded in Washington, D.C., in 1927 by the merchant, manufacturer, and philanthropist Robert S. Brookings and devoted to public service through research and education in the social sciences, particularly in economics, government, and foreign policy. It is one of the most influential think tanks in the United States.

  • Strengthen American democracy;
  • Foster the economic and social welfare, security and opportunity of all Americans; and
  • Secure a more open, safe, prosperous and cooperative international system.
