August 8: Today is anniversary of a democratic lesson to the world: President Richard Nixon announces his resignation as President of the United States, all television networks, which will be effective at noon tomorrow.

1) The Watergate scandal begins when the Nixon administration attempted to cover up the break in.
2) In an attempt to assure Nixon’s reelection in 1972 Nixon advisors ordered the 5 men to break into the Democratic Party’s headquarters and steal any sensitive campaign information and tap the telephones.

Today is the anniversary of the resignation of US President Richard Milhous Nixon, in 1974.

Nixon has been the only US president to resign from office. The Watergate scandal began when Nixon´s aides were caught raiding offices of the Democratic Party in the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC, and caused the arrest of five men.

Additionally, the president kept tapes of recordings made in the White House with evidence of obstruction of justice. These recordings became known as "The Smoking Gun", the scandal.

After a long legal battle with the Supreme Court, Nixon had to surrender its secret recordings and bringing charges to his employees. So, the President presented his resignation in brief to Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger.

One of the major conclusions has been that such a political scandal was the lesson of democracy that America has given the world. That process led to international acclaim.

Also we remember that it was under President Nixon that his formidable Secretary of State undertook diplomatic advances achieved with the Soviet Union and China, to finally open their borders to the outside world.
