May 11: Today is the anniversary of the founding of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, California, in 1927.

On May 11, 1927 was founded the USA in Los Angeles, California. The American filmmaker Louis B. Mayer was its founder and promoter. Louis Mayer was also the president and founder of the Metro Golden-Mayer studios -MGM-. The corporation became world famous for the annual awards in Hollywood, the world capital of cinema, with the awards "Oscar".


During a dinner at his home, M-G-M studio chief Louis B. Mayer and his guests talked about creating an organized group to benefit the film industry. A week later, 36 invitees from all the creative branches of the film industry dined at Los Angeles's Ambassador Hotel to hear a proposal to found the International Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The actress Bette Davis said in his biography that the statuette was named as such in honor of her first husband, Oscar Nelson. It seems nobody refuted.
